Design and Technology
At Idle Church of England Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology enables our pupils to become creative, practical problem-solvers who can design, make and evaluate products for a real purpose. Through hands-on experiences, children develop the skills and confidence to turn their ideas into meaningful outcomes.
Rooted in our Christian values of love, courage and joy, our DT curriculum encourages pupils to take risks, learn from mistakes and take pride in creating purposeful designs
Our DT Curriculum
Our Design and Technology curriculum is carefully designed to build knowledge and skills over time. Pupils learn to design for a purpose, create using a range of tools and materials, and evaluate their work to make improvements.
We want our pupils to:
- Design and make products to meet real needs and purposes
- Develop practical skills using a range of tools and materials
- Understand how design impacts everyday life
- Build resilience, independence and problem-solving skills
What Our Children Learn
Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure clear progression across year groups:
- Key Stage 1: Exploring simple designing and making, using basic tools and understanding purpose
- Lower Key Stage 2: Developing control, applying techniques and designing for specific users
- Upper Key Stage 2: Creating more complex, innovative products with independence and evaluation
Children learn through a range of design areas, including:
- Structures
- Mechanisms and mechanical systems
- Electrical systems
- Textiles
- Food and nutrition
- Design, innovation and evaluation
Our DT Skills
Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key DT skills:
- Designing – generating ideas and planning for a purpose
- Making – using tools and materials to create products
- Evaluating – testing and improving outcomes
- Technical Knowledge – understanding structures, systems and materials
These skills progress from early exploration in Key Stage 1 to confident, independent design and innovation by the end of Year 6.
