Idle Church of England Primary School

Medical Needs, First Aid and Allergy Support

Growing Together with Love, Courage and Joy

At Idle CE Primary School, the health, safety and wellbeing of our pupils is a priority. We are committed to ensuring that all children, including those with medical conditions, allergies or additional healthcare needs, are supported to access school life fully and safely.

We work closely with parents, carers, health professionals and external agencies to ensure that appropriate support is in place and that every child feels safe, included and able to flourish.

Supporting Pupils with Medial Conditions

We recognise that children with medical conditions should be properly supported to enable them to participate fully in all aspects of school life, including lessons, educational visits, clubs and residential experiences.

Where required, Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) are developed in partnership with parents and healthcare professionals. These plans help staff understand and respond to a child's specific medical needs and ensure support is consistent and effective.

The school uses Medical Tracker to maintain medical records, healthcare plans, medication records and incidents, ensuring information remains accurate and up to date.

First Aid

A number of staff across the school are qualified first aiders and paediatric first aiders. Appropriate first aid equipment is available throughout the school and on all educational visits.

We ensure that:

  • Trained staff are available throughout the school day.
  • First aid equipment is regularly checked and replenished.
  • Head injuries are monitored carefully and communicated to parents.
  • Serious incidents are responded to promptly and in line with emergency procedures.
  • Accident and first aid records are maintained appropriately.

Allergy Awareness

The school is committed to providing a safe, inclusive environment for pupils with allergies. We recognise that allergic reactions can be serious and, in some cases, life-threatening.

To support pupils with allergies, we:

  • Maintain Individual Healthcare Plans where required.
  • Provide regular allergy-awareness training for staff.
  • Hold emergency medication, including spare adrenaline auto-injectors where appropriate.
  • Work closely with families and catering providers.
  • Complete risk assessments for visits and activities.
  • Promote awareness and understanding of allergies throughout the school community.

Working in Partnership with Families

Parents and carers play an important role in helping us support medical needs effectively. We ask families to:

  • Inform the school of any medical conditions or allergies.
  • Provide any required medication and ensure it remains in date.
  • Share relevant medical information with the school.
  • Attend reviews of healthcare plans where appropriate.
  • Notify the school promptly of any changes to a child's medical needs.
