Religious Education

Growing Together with Love, Courage and Joy

At Idle CE Primary School, Religious Education (RE) is a valued and important part of our curriculum. As a Church of England school, RE helps children develop knowledge, understanding, curiosity and respect as they explore Christianity, other faiths and non-religious worldviews.

Through RE, pupils are encouraged to ask big questions about life, belief, meaning and purpose. Children learn about different religions, beliefs and traditions, helping them to understand and appreciate the diverse world in which they live.

Our RE curriculum supports pupils to grow academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually while developing the values of love, courage and joy.

What Do Children Learn?

We follow the Leeds and York Diocesan Syllabus for Religious Education.

Throughout their time at Idle CE Primary School, children will:

  • Develop a secure understanding of Christianity.
  • Learn about a range of religions including Judaism, Islam and Hinduism.
  • Explore non-religious worldviews, including Humanism.
  • Reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.
  • Develop respect and understanding for those with different beliefs and backgrounds.
  • Discuss important questions about identity, belonging, faith, morality and purpose.

How Do We Teach RE?

We provide engaging and meaningful learning experiences through:

  • Discussion and debate.
  • Storytelling and religious texts.
  • Visits to places of worship.
  • Visitors from different faith communities.
  • Art, drama and creative activities.
  • Reflection and enquiry-based learning.

We are proud of our close links with Holy Trinity Church, Idle, which help enrich our Religious Education curriculum.

Religious Education and Collective Worship

Religious Education and Collective Worship are distinct but complementary.

  • Religious Education teaches children about religions and worldviews through learning, enquiry and discussion.
  • Collective Worship provides opportunities for reflection, prayer and spiritual development as a school community.

Right of Withdrawl

Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. If you would like to discuss this, please contact the Headteacher.
