Science
At Idle Church of England Primary School, Science enables pupils to explore, understand and question the world around them through enquiry and investigation. We inspire curiosity and a sense of wonder, encouraging pupils to ask questions, test ideas and experience the excitement of discovery.
Rooted in our Christian values of love, courage and joy, our Science curriculum supports pupils to respect living things and the environment, while developing confidence in their ability to think scientifically and solve problems.
Our Science Curriculum
Our Science curriculum is carefully structured to build knowledge and skills progressively across four key areas:
- Biology – living things, animals, plants and evolution
- Chemistry – materials, their properties and changes
- Physics – forces, light, sound, electricity and Earth and space
- Working Scientifically – enquiry, investigation and analysis
Learning is sequenced from simple observation in Key Stage 1 to deeper explanation, reasoning and evaluation by the end of Year 6.
We want our pupils to:
- Develop curiosity about how the world works
- Understand real-life scientific issues such as health, environment and technology
- Become confident in questioning, investigating and problem-solving
- Be prepared for future learning and life in an increasingly scientific world
What Our Children Learn
Pupils experience a broad and balanced Science curriculum, including:
- Learning about animals, plants and the human body
- Exploring materials and their properties
- Investigating forces, light, sound and electricity
- Understanding Earth, space and environmental change
- Studying evolution and inheritance
Each year also includes a dedicated investigation unit, where pupils apply their learning and develop enquiry skills through practical science.
Developing Skills as Scientists
Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key scientific skills:
- Questioning – asking relevant scientific questions
- Planning and Investigating – carrying out fair tests and enquiries
- Observing and Measuring – using equipment and taking accurate measurements
- Recording and Communicating – presenting findings using charts, graphs and explanations
- Analysing and Evaluating – identifying patterns, drawing conclusions and evaluating results
These skills progress from simple exploration in Key Stage 1 to independent enquiry and evaluation by Year 6.
