History
At Idle Church of England Primary School, we believe that History helps our pupils to understand the world around them and their place within it. Through studying the past, children develop curiosity, empathy and a strong sense of identity, exploring how events, people and societies have shaped the present.
Rooted in our Christian values of love, courage and joy, our History curriculum encourages pupils to respect different perspectives, think critically and develop a lifelong interest in the past
Our History Curriculum
Our History curriculum is carefully designed to build knowledge and skills over time. Pupils explore a range of historical periods, from ancient civilisations to modern history, while also developing a strong understanding of our local heritage in Idle, Bradford and Yorkshire.
We want our pupils to:
- Understand how the past has shaped the present
- Develop awareness of local, national and global history
- Appreciate diversity in cultures, societies and beliefs
- Become thoughtful, informed citizens
What Our Children Learn
Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure clear progression across year groups:
- Key Stage 1: Understanding the difference between past and present through familiar events and significant individuals
- Lower Key Stage 2: Developing knowledge of historical periods, change over time and early civilisations
- Upper Key Stage 2: Exploring more complex societies, conflict and global history, with deeper analysis and understanding
Historical Skills
Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key historical skills:
- Chronology – understanding when events happened and how periods connect
- Enquiry – asking and answering questions about the past
- Use of Evidence – working with sources such as artefacts, images and texts
- Cause and Consequence – understanding why events happened
- Interpretation – recognising that history can be viewed in different ways
These skills progress from simple understanding in Key Stage 1 to deeper analysis by the end of Year 6.
